In this series of posts, we’ll explore the world of scintillation, starting at the most basic – how scintillation materials respond to radiation. While scintillators come in many forms – gas, liquid, solid, and both organic and inorganic – we will focus on inorganic crystal forms, a sweet spot for us since Hilger Crystals has grown crystals since the mid 1930’s . Scintillation is a flash of light produced in a transparent material by the passage of a particle (an electron, an alpha particle, an ion, or a high-energy photon). Scintillation occurs in the scintillator, which is a key part of a scintillation detector. Radiation Dosimetry Scintillation detectors emit photons of ultraviolet and visible light due to interaction of radiation emitted by radioactive materials. A scintillation counter or scintillation detector is a radiation detector which uses the effect known as scintillation.Scintillation is a flash of light produced in a transparent material by the passage of a particle (an electron, an alpha particle, an ion, or a high-energy photon). Liquid scintillation counters are used in wide variety of applications within the radiation measurement fields, ranging from low level measurements of naturally occurring isotopes to radiation protection officers and security screening in routine and accidental preparedness applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of Cerenkov radiation to the overall signal measured with a novel inorganic scintillating detector (ISD). Methods: An ISD based on terbium doped gadolinium oxysulphide (Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb) was used.
